Indiana Pacers NBA

The Indiana Pacers is a professional basketball team that is a member of the National Basketball Association (NBA). It is located in the centre of Indiana. The Indiana Fever is its sister team and Melvin & Herb Simon are its owners. The Indiana Pacers mascots named the Boomer and Bowser are present at all home games and often in NBA games too. They play at Conseco Fiedhouse wearing blue, gold and white colored uniforms
They played their debut match in 1967 as a member of ABA. It is amongst the eight teams that are members of the Central Division of the Eastern Conference of the NBA. Basketball has always been a popular sport in Indiana but the three teams before the Pacers failed to carve a niche and were terminated. These teams were the Indianapolis Olympians, the Indianapolis Jets and the Fort Wayne Pistons. They lasted for only a year.
While a member of ABA they bagged three consecutive championship titles during 1970-1973. After they became a member of NBA in 1976 they struggled for more than ten seasons. However things changed for the better in the mid 90s under the leadership of Reggie Miller who steered the team into the Eastern Conference Finals thrice in 1994, 1995 and in 1998. They made it to the NBA Finals for the very first time in 2000.

In addition to three Division titles in ABA and four Division titles in NBA to date the Pacers have also bagged five conference titles in ABA and one in NBA. 2003 marked the return of O’ Neil and Reggie Miller who were signed by them. Larry Bird was appointed as the team president. He fired Coach Isiah Thomas and supplanted him with Rick Carlisle. It was a wise decision as the new coach led the team to an outstanding season with a finishing record of 61-21, which earned them the best ever record in NBA record books. O’Neal and Artest played well and Artest bagged the NBA’s best Defensive Player of the Year award. Meanwhile Reggie Miller took retirement after a career spanning 18 years. He played exceptionally well in his last game and a standing ovation marked the end of a great players career. Sarunas Jasikevicius was signed in 2005-2006 season and Artest was traded in exchange for Peja Stojakovic in the same season. In April 2007 the Pacers officially fired coach Carlisle owing mainly to the teams losing record. In spite of chance to return in another role ex coach Carlisle chose to have no association with the organization and instead opted to do the honors of broadcasting with ESPN.  He returned to the field as the coach for the Dallas Mavericks in 2008.
In May 2007 Jim O’Brien was appointed as the new head coach for the Indiana Pacers. He made his intentions of taking the Pacers back to the playoffs in the 2007-2008 season very clear. Further his fast paced style made it clear that his strategy was going to be different than that of Carlisle’s.
